Pakistani lawmakers restored government to the country after days of political uncertainty when they elected a ruling party loyalist as prime minister on Friday.

Raja Pervaiz Ashraf won enough votes in Pakistan's National Assembly to lead the government, according to The Guardian.

"I will do my best to make sure I live up to the example set by those who have come before me," he said.

He will lead a nation in disarray after the supreme court disqualified Yousuf Raza Gilani as prime minister on Tuesday for refusing to reopen fraud investigations into President Asif Ali Zardari. The disqualification of Gilani has left Pakistan without a cabinet for almost a week.

Ashraf's previous cabinet job as water and power chief, which coincided with severe electricity shortages, has led some analysts to question if he is the right leader for the  Pakistan People's Party. He is likely to be caught up in the same legal battle as Gilani if the supreme court continues to press the prime minister to pursue money laundering allegations against Zardari.
