One Soldier Dead, Two Injured In Fort Bragg Shooting
The shooter is injured and in custody after turning the gun on himself. The other injured Army soldier is reported to be "slightly" wounded. The names of those involved have yet to be released.
Fort Bragg military police secured the scene within minutes. While the shooting is under investigation, officials said it does not appear to be terrorism-related.
The shooting comes the day after National Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness Day was marked on Capitol Hill. A highly-rated 48 Hours Mystery episode this week featured soldier-related violence in the case of Pvt. John Needham.
"This is a tragedy for our community,’’ said Col. Kevin Arata, a spokesman for the base. "We don’t yet know the reasons for the shooting, but are working with the unit and the affected families to help them through this difficult period."
The victim was from the 525th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, a reconnaissance and intelligence unit.
Fort Bragg has the largest population of any military base in the country, with 55,000 military members and 8,000 civillians working there, according to the Los Angeles Times.
