With The Noose Tightening, Julian Assange Makes Last Bid For Freedom

After Britain's Supreme Court ruled last week against his plea and affirmed Sweden's extradition order, Julian Assange surprised his supporters and attorneys by taking refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy on Tuesday, where he spent the night and continues to reside.

British police are waiting outside the embassy to arrest Assange who, by staying there overnight, violated the terms of his bail which included an overnight curfew. 

According to the AP, Ecuador said Assange would "remain at the embassy, under the protection of the Ecuadorean government" while authorities in Quito consider his case. Even if Ecuador's leftist president, Rafael Correa, were to grant Assange asylum, experts say, 'it would be almost impossible for him to leave the UK without being arrested'.

"Even if he was in a diplomatic vehicle driving out the back door, that vehicle would be stopped and he would be extracted from it by the Metropolitan Police," Alex Carlile, a senior British attorney with expertise in extradition matters, told the Associated Press.
