I am not sure that I am qualified to write this report. I have not seen any versions of the famous musical, "Les Miserables," nor read the original novel of the same name, by Victor Hugo. I have never listened to any of its numbers, composed by Claude-Michel Schönberg, with lyrics by Alain Boublil. I have never even heard of any of the countless film adaptations that have been made to this day, though none are particularly of note. But when this moving teaser trailer played in the movie theater last night, I was left quite awed. 

Featuring Anne Hathaway, Russel Crowe, Amanda Seyfried, and a de-Wolverined Hugh Jackman, the teaser is set to a tearful rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream," by Hathaway. Also in the film, but not appearing in the trailer, are Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter. Within the minute-and-a-half long trailer, countless landscapes are pictured, but the bulk of it is centered in France, in the 19th century. The story, little of which is revealed in the trailer, focuses on Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman), an ex-convict who promises Fantine (Anne Hathaway) to protect her illegitimate child, Cosette (Amanda Seyfried), all the while under the accusing glare of Inspector Javert (Russel Crowe). It is a tale of poverty, tragedy, hardships, and ultimately, hope and redemption. 

Aside from the star-studded cast, director Tom Hooper is causing much of the buzz surrounding "Les Miserables." Proud owner of the 2011 Oscars for best picture and best directing for "The King's Speech," Hooper promises to be a wonderful match for "Les Miserable," with his distinct period style and emotional direction. 

Having seen the trailer, I came home and set to researching the musical and this adaptation. I am not particularly knowledgeable about musicals, but the teaser for this swept me up immediately. I know I will be going to see this in December––it is set for release on the 14th––and I will be prepared for several good cries, much visual bedazzlement, and a feast of aural splendor.
