Since Paraguay’s Congress impeached President Fernando Lugo Friday, several entities have condemned the move and have taken a stand in opposition to the decision.

Latin American leaders have threatened to isolate Paraguay, comparing the Senate’s actions to a coup for power. They have not only proposed to expel Paraguay from the Mercosur trade bloc, but they have also pledged not to recognize the new government of Federico Franco.

Despite urging Paraguayans to refrain from protesting his removal, Lugo’s supporters have taken to the streets to condemn the hasty impeachment proceeding and to express their unwavering support for Lugo.

Meanwhile, the new president, sworn in immediately after Lugo’s removal, has promised to foster relationships with other Latin American leaders, in an effort to neutralize the threat they pose to isolate Paraguay. His and his government’s efforts are now focused on minimizing fallout and transitioning as smoothly as possible.
