Leather can never be eco-friendly, but Gucci is trying its best by launching Sustainable Soles (a shoe line for men and women made out of biodegradable materials) as a part of its pre-fall 2012 collection.

Designed by Gucci's creative director, Frida Giannini, the line as yet only includes two styles, one for men and one for women. Marola Green are ballerina flats available in polished colors like blush, taupe and black, designed with a sense of continuity, broken only by cutout detailing and the company’s double-G motif. For men are the California Green men’s sneakers, available in both high- and low-top, featuring bio-rubber soles, vegetable-tanned calfskin, bio-strings, rhodium-plated metal details and tongues featuring the brand's logo.

The project reflects Gucci’s commitment to the Copenhagen Fashion Summit, the world’s most important conference on sustainable fashion. Sustainable Soles will be available in Gucci’s electronic and flagship stores worldwide by the end of June.
