Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords's hand-picked Democratic successor won a special election Tuesday in southern Arizona, and will finish Giffords's term, according to the Associated Press.

Ron Barber will also seek reelection after the term ends. He defeated a Republican who lost to Giffords in the 2012 election.

Barber was wounded in the 2011 shooting rampage that nearly killed the Congresswoman. He served as an aide to Giffords before filling her Representative role.

The election served as another precursor to the November elections, when seats from Presidency on down will be in contention between the Democrats and Republicans.
