Mohamned Morsi has been sworn in to office by Egypt’s highest court. He is the country’s first freely elected president.

Although Morsi wanted the swearing in ceremony to take place in the parliament as per the country’s constitution, given that the military recently dissolved the parliament he had no choice but to take his oath before the court.

However, before the court ceremony took place, while at the birthplace of the revolution, Morsi swore himself in at Tahrir Square after condemning the military for attempting to limit his powers as president, and vowing to reclaim it.

In a speech to the crowd assembled in Tahrir Square, Morsi promised social justice, an end to discrimination and torture, and promised, “no institution will be above the people.”

He proclaimed that this is the beginning of “a new Egypt, the second republic.”
