The results of the presidential election in Egypt will be announced Sunday. In the meantime, the polarization of Egypt inspired by the elections has erupted into disputes regarding the legitimacy of the election results, whatever they will be. Both sides have claimed victory.

The delay in receiving the results of the voting has resulted in fear that the military is meddling with either the election results or with the candidates to determine a possible sharing of power once the results are announced.

Mohammed Morsi, presidential candidate and member of the Muslim Brotherhood, called for Egyptians to gather at Tahrir Square until the military revokes its orders curbing the civilian-elected president’s powers, and reinstates the parliament. The protest began on Wednesday, and has grown since.

No matter which candidate wins the presidency, the new government will still have to contend with the power of the military.
