Talks between the Quebecoise government and students fell apart this week after four days of negotiating. Students are demanding a two-year tuition freeze, as well as the repeal of an incendiary emergency anti-protest law that was passed on May 18. The emergency law, which allows officials to heavily fine unions and student organizations if they do not stop their members from protesting, has angered many students in the region.

During the negotiation talks, officials offered students a $53 tuition hike decrease, which student representatives refused. Students also demanded a repeal of the emergency law, which officials refused. Reports say that more than 2,500 students have been arrested since the protests began in February of this year in response to a proposed tuition hike. However, students promise to continue demonstrating through the weekend in reaction to the talks falling apart.
