Along with directing, Everett will be writing and starring in the film, to be called "The Happy Prince." The cast will also feature Colin Firth, Emily Watson, and Tom Wilkinson, who most recently appeared in "Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy," "War Horse," and "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol," respectively. Rupert Everett himself played in several adaptations of Wilde's works, including "The Importance of Being Earnest" (2002), in which he co-starred with Firth, and "An Ideal Husband" (1999). 

The film's subject, Oscar Wilde, is best known for his works "The Importance of Being Earnest," and "The Picture of Dorian Gray." Born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1854, Wilde lived a tragically short life, dying at the age of 46. He was known for his brilliant and humorous wit and flamboyant style. Being gay, he was imprisoned for two years for acts of "gross indecency" with other men. After serving his term, he moved to France where he spent the last two years of his life in poverty and depression. According the The Hollywood Reporter, "The Happy Prince" will focus on this time in Wilde's life, looking back at his life through the lens of Wilde's legendary dry humor and wit. 

The film is scheduled to begin filming next year. "Control"'s cinematographer Martin Ruhe and "The White Ribbons"'s production designer Chrisoph Kanter are also attached to the project.
