GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney continued his ongoing effort to reach out to political conservatives with a commencement speech at the historically conservative and Christian Liberty University.

Romney's appointment as Liberty University's commencement speaker came about a month ago, and initially incited backlash--Mormonism is considered a cult by the school.

However, Romney sought to unite all peoples of Christian faith in his commencement speech, stating:

"People of different faiths like yours and mine, sometimes wonder where we can meet in common purpose, when there are so many differences in creed and theology... Surely the answer is that we can meet in service, in shared moral convictions about our nation stemming from a common worldview."

Following President Obama's announcement this week that he supported marriage equality, Romney also said in his speech today that he did not support gay marriage. According to Reuters, his statement "Marriage is a relationship between one man and one woman" brought the crowd to its feet.

While students and parents interviewed in the crowd still had concerns over Romney's faith, the overwhelming sentiment before, during and after the speech was that whatever his faults, Romney was still preferential over President Obama.
