A fire that began at a nursery in the Middle Eastern Qatari capital of Doha and spread to a shopping mall killed at least 19 people on Monday, including 13 children and four teachers.

According to state minister for the interior Abdullah bin Nasser Al-Thani, firefighters broke through the roof to rescue children who were trapped after a staircase collapsed in the nursery.

The Telegraph reported that it was unclear what had caused the fire. The Villagio Mall- an Italian-themed shopping center was built in 2006 and included a hotel, theme park and canals with gondolas.
