“Game of Thrones” will officially return for a third season on HBO. The steamy series has reached record ratings with its return in the second season.

“Series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss raised our expectations for the second season—and then surpassed them,” said HBO President Michael Lombardo in a press release.

The news came as no surprise as the first season was a huge success, as indicated by the number of people on the edge of their seats waiting for the show’s return. Season two’s premiere totaled to 4.22 million viewers during two subsequent airings, according to MTV.

This was a record-breaking rating, topping off the 3.04 million the season one finale gained. “Thrones” kept a steady rating the following week, with 3.8 million viewers tuning in to the second episode.

The show’s momentum is questioned by no one and HBO noted in its press release that “Thrones” can and will easily surpass season one’s average of 9.3 million viewers.

The highly anticipated fantasy series is a book adaptation based on George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” novels. The drama takes place in the world of Westeros, where summers and winters can last for years.

So far with its steady track record, “Thrones” will have no problem following through to its finale. Even though it hasn’t even been halfway through the second season, everyone can exhale a sigh of relief that their favorite show is sure to come back. Winter may be coming, but so is season three.
