Who said the movie industry couldn't get any dumber?

As reported on ComingSoon.net, a sequel to the 1994 comedy hit "Dumb and Dumber" is set to begin production this September under the direction of the Farrelly brothers.

At an event for "The Three Stooges," which hits theaters April 13, Peter Farrelly announced that Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels will reprise their roles as Lloyd and Harry for the upcoming flick.

"We've always wanted to do a sequel and finally Jim called up," Farrelly said. "Jeff always wanted to do it. We always wanted to do it. Jim was busy, but he called and said, 'We've got to do this thing again.' He had just watched 'Dumb and Dumber' and he said, 'This is the perfect sequel. Let's do it.'"

The last installment in the series came in 2003 in the form of a prequel, "Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd." Farrelly insists that the film, which met awful reviews, was a "studio thing" and that the sequel will have a fresh direction.

"Dumb and Dumber" isn't the only comedy franchise to recently announce plans for a new installment:

- Will Ferrell made a surprise appearance on Conan O'Brien's talk show last week to tell the world that Ron Burgundy and the gang are hitting the big screen once more for "Anchorman 2."

- Warner Bros. recently gave their moneymaking "Wolf Pack" a May 2013 release date; "The Hangover Part III" will kick off the studio's summer calendar.

- Screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith has confirmed that a sequel to the 1988 dark comedy "Beetlejuice" is on its way with Michael Keaton and Tim Burton at the helm.
