Wallace died on Saturday evening at Waveny Care Center in New Canaan, Conn. with his family by his side. The cause of death was not released, according to The New York Times.

Known for his to-the-point interviewing style, Wallace has sat down with every U.S. president since John F. Kennedy with the exception of George W. Bush. In addition, he has interviewed other world leaders like Yasser Arafat, Ayatollah Khomeini and Deng Xiaoping.

The University of Michigan alum preceded tough questions with his famous line, "Forgive me for asking."

"As soon as you hear that, you realize the nasty question's about to come," Wallace told The Times.

Wallace left his full-time role with 60 Minutes in 2006, but stayed onboard as a part-time contributor. His last interview came in 2008 with baseball pitcher Roger Clemens, who was accused of steroid use.

"His extraordinary contribution as a broadcaster is immeasurable and he has been a force within the television industry throughout its existence. His loss will be felt by all of us at CBS," Leslie Moonves, president and CEO of CBS Corporation, said in a statement.

A special 60 Minutes program dedicated to Wallace will air on April 15, according to Reuters. Longtime colleague Morley Safer remembered Wallace in a video tribute posted on CBS' website.

"For half a century, he took on corrupt politicians, scam artists and bureaucratic bumblers," Safer said. "His visits were preceded by the four dreaded words: Mike Wallace is here."

In a recent Playboy interview, Wallace's son Chris, a Fox News Sunday anchor, said his father's health had deteriorated and the only thing he talked about was his family, according to USA Today.

"There's a lesson there. This is a man who had a fabulous career and for whom work always came first. Now he can't even remember it," Chris Wallace said.

Mike Wallace married four times and had a daughter named Pauline. Another son, Peter, died in a mountain-climbing accident in 1962.
