Catholics Propose Boycott Of “The Daily Show”
Stewart was ridiculing Fox News for undermining the seriousness of what many call “the war on women” and instead, focusing on more mundane topics like the supposed “war on Christmas.” He suggested that in order for women to get the attention of Fox News they “could protect their reproductive organs from unwanted medial intrusions with vagina mangers” or even replace the chocolate in Advent calendars with birth-control pills.
The president of the Catholic League Bill Donohue said in a press release that “Stewart not only made a vulgar attack on Christmas, he objectified women.” He expects Stewart to apologize for the obscenity or else threatens to raise a boycott of his sponsors with the support of not only Catholics but also Protestants, Jews, Mormons and Muslims.
Donohue also criticized the media for covering-up the controversy of Stewart’s segment. “Reuters did a story on Monday’s edition of ‘The Daily Show’ but never mentioned the vagina manger scene segment,” Donohue pointed out. He also notes that news sources like the the Los Angeles Times, NBC Chicago and NBC New York also excluded the scene.
Brent Bozell, the founder of conservative Media Research Center, also criticized Stewart calling him “not only a bigot, but also an outright coward.” He challenged Stewart saying, “Since you’re so brave to offend Christians, are you equally brave to offend Muslims and Jews?”
Stewart and Comedy Central have not yet responded to the criticism.
