Afghan security forces arrested five militants who had smuggled 10,000 kilograms (22,000 pounds) of explosives from Pakistan to launch an attack in Kabul, the Associated Press reports.

The five men were composed of three members of the Pakistani Taliban, and two members of the Afghan Taliban. The explosives were “hidden under bags of potatoes in a big truck with Pakistani license plates,” CNN reports.

The spokesman for the National Director for Security, Shafiqullah Tahiry, said that the men confessed to planning an attack on a “key point” in Kabul. Tahiry “provided a DVD showing images of the truck and the recorded confessions of the men, but did not provide other proof to back up the claims,” according to the Associated Press.

CNN explains:

“The suspects said they were ordered by Pakistani Taliban leaders and members of Pakistan's intelligence agency, the ISI, to transfer the explosives from the Pakistani border city of Peshawar to Kabul for use in terror attacks.”

These new developments come a week after attacks were launched in Kabul and other areas of Afghanistan.
