TRE AT TAILBACK: Sophomore Tre Madden, who came to USC as a linebacker, will remain at running back going forward. Madden started taking offensive reps earlier this spring.

"Madden did some pretty special things," head coach Lane Kiffin said after practice. "The ability to stay up at 225 pounds, to stay up with that forward lean. And then you see the speed from a big guy too."

The six-foot athlete from Aliso Viejo was ranked as the No. 6 lineback in the country coming out of high school. He recorded 15 tackles for the Trojans last season. Madden adds depth at a position with only two returning letter winners: senior Curtis McNeal and sophomore D.J. Morgan.

ON THE TRACK: Sophomore wide receiver Marqise Lee missed practice Saturday to compete for USC in the Trojan Invitational at Loker Stadium. Lee won the men's long jump with a distance of 23 feet, 11.5 inches.

Fellow long jumper Nickell Robey said he wish he could have competed with Lee, but decided to forego the track meet to work out with special teams at football practice.

"I feel like I made the right choice for myself by coming out here with my team," Robey said. "I'm a competitor, so I'll be a little disappointed. But this is for the team, so I had to put my personal problems out of the way."

INJURY REPORT: QB Jesse Scroggins (hip injury), RB Javorious "Buck" Allen (hamstring), WR George Farmer (hamstring) and C Khaled Holmes (calf) all sat out Saturday's practice. Kiffin hopes the four will be back on Tuesday. Both scholarship tight ends, Xavier Grimble (toe) and Randall Telfer (hamstring), also sat out today's practice, and LB Dion Bailey (hamstring) was limited.

DEPLETED OFFENSE: Coach Kiffin couldn't run a full scrimmage with a lack of offensive players available to him. A combination of transfers, a track meet, and injuries left Kiffin with just two scholarship wide receivers, and no scholarship players at either tight end or fullback by the end of practice. Fullback Soma Vainuku injured his back during practice.

"The offense did a lot better than I thought they would have with the personnel out there, so that was good to see," Kiffin said.

Kiffin had particular praise for scholarship receiver De'Von Flournoy, who he said "made a number of plays."
