The 2012 SXSW film festival wrapped up today with the premiere of the headlining film “Big Easy Express.”

The documentary follows bands Mumford and Sons, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Old Crow Medicine Show all aboard a train trekking along the southern border of the U.S. from Palo Alto to New Orleans. The intermingling of folk music from the bands set against the beautiful backdrop of the U.S. landscape is nothing short of majestic.

The bands traveled thousands of miles to play six shows, yet the music didn’t end with the concerts. The joyful crew got right back on the train and blended folk music together into the night, even dreaming up new songs along the way.

Director Emmett Malloy and members of all three bands attended the screening, which ended in a short, lively concert that nearly recreated the familial and happy-go-lucky tone of the documentary. Mumford and Sons even strummed a fresh, new tune.

When asked what the future holds for the film, Malloy sounded hopeful.

“This is the first time we’ve screened it,” he said. “And I hope it doesn’t end here.”
