Former Internation Monetary Fund chief and onetime presidential hopeful Dominique Strauss-Kahn was charged by French authorities Monday for "aggravated pimping" for allegedly participating in a prostitution ring, prosecutors say.

Strauss-Kahn has been ordered not to talk to the media or anyone else being implicated in the case, and was asked to pay the equivalent of $133,500 bail.

The Wall Street Journal says, A lawyer for Mr. Strauss-Kahn said Monday that his client "strongly and firmly" rejected the preliminary charges of "aggravated pimping."

Prostitution is legal in France, but pimping isn't. To convict him, prosecutors would have to prove that he played an organizational role in the alleged prostitution ring.

Strauss-Kahn has been investigated and question by police for months.  His attorneys issued a statement in November saying the allegations were "unhealthy, sensationalist and not without a political agenda," according to CNN.

Though he's been the center of a number of sex scandals, including an alleged attempt at rape, the former IMF chief has never been convicted of a crime.

Sex scandals have interfered with his political ambitions, ruining his run for presidency and causing him to step down from his position of power at the IMF.
