"Revenge" Recap: Episode 16, "Scandal"

The most recent episode of ABC's hit drama “Revenge," appropriately titled “Scandal," was filled with plenty of sinful and sneaky twists and turns (Drug addictions! Jail time! A murder investigation! A love triangle! Divorce drama!), begging fans to ask, what could the powers that be possibly think of next?

The episode starts off in the wake of the murder of our favorite late and great malicious ginger, Tyler Barrol. With Daniel as the primary suspect in the murder case, the Grayson family goes into full-scale defense mode, hiring a powerful defense attorney and using cutesey Brit Ashely as their official PR spokesperson to deal with the media (anyone else wonder why a random, lowly party planner is now suddenly the family’s go-to PR person?). It comes out that, after much questioning, that Daniel (rather conveniently) has no recollection of the fight that ensued between him and Tyler on the beach. However, he does remember Tyler spilling all the dirty deets about Daniel’s bride-to-be Emily and her plans for revenge on the Graysons. This sends a paranoid Daniel in search of Emily’s revenge box, which Emily, always one step ahead of everyone else, had gotten rid of and replaced with a fake. After calming Daniel down and insisting that Tyler was just a jealous crazy person, it appears that the Thorne-Grayson wedding of the century may not be called off after all. That is, until Daniel and Emily’s brief romantic moment of reconciliation gets busted up by the feds coming in to arrest Daniel for the murder of one Mister Tyler Barrol.

This sends Victoria into a complete and total mommy meltdown, telling Emily that she can’t abandon Daniel now because it will make people question the legitimacy of their relationship and make him appear more guilty to the public (it’s all about good PR, people). After all, jail is no place for a pretty, rich, Hamptonite like Daniel. The judge, seeming to have some kind of grudge against the obscenely wealthy (I mean, really, who is she to hate such an outstanding, moral, generous family like the Graysons?) decides to send Daniel to jail without bail. This sends Victoria into a full-blown freak out sesh, screaming like a member of "The Real Housewives" in the middle of the court room. Things are only made worse after photos of a bloodied Daniel at the scene of the crime are leaked to the public (thanks to two-timing, sneaky Brit Ashley, but hey, any publicity is good publicity…am I right?) and rumors start swirling about his guilt. That, combined with new evidence that the security cameras at the party had been tampered with, makes Daniel look guiltier by the second. This causes Daniel to confess that he does remember some occurrences from that night. He claims that Tyler charged at him, he shot Tyler once in the chest in self-defense, but then got knocked out by someone (or something) in the back of the head. However, the mystery remains of who actually killed Tyler, because he had two more shots in his back…from after Daniel had already been knocked unconscious.

This new information, along with the tampered security tape footage, leads Emily to believe one person is responsible for Tyler's murder: her former mentor and Japanese businessman Takeda. And she’s right. The episode closes with a dramatic flashback to the night of the shooting with Takeda breaking into Emily’s home and confronting her, telling her in his stereotypical wise, sensei way that he has “tied up all her loose ends” and “done what she could not”. He tells an angered and flustered Emily that he was the one who killed Tyler (after knocking out Daniel), that he “took care" of faux-manda (whatever that means?!). The episode ends with more set up for the already tumultuous Jack-Daniel-Emily love triangle, with Takeda warning Emily she can’t protect both Daniel and Jack in the long run and must eventually choose between them. With so many fresh scandals to resolve (Daniel’s going to jail! Ashley is two-timing the Graysons! Emily can’t decide between Jack and Daniel! Rebellious teen Charlotte’s still popping pills!) and no new episodes until April, I guess we’ll all be forced to come up with our own theories until then.

"Revenge" airs every Wednesday on ABC at 10/9 central.
