New Hong Kong Leader Chosen
Former government cabinet member Leung Chun-ying was named chief executive after receiving 689 of 1,200 votes from a committee of business leaders and politicians, according to The Daily Beast.
Hundreds of thousands of pro-democracy protestors gathered outside the polling station to show disapproval of the selection process. They were prevented from entering by police, according to the Guardian.
Less than 0.02 percent of the 7.1 million people in Hong Kong were allowed to vote in the “election.” A popular vote for chief executive is supposed to be held in 2017.
Leung will take office in July.
“I make a solemn promise . . . that the freedoms and rights enjoyed today by the people of Hong Kong will absolutely not be changed at all,” he told the Washington Post.
