Angelinos can rejoice as their municipal nightmare is over: Frank McCourt no longer owns the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Magic Johnson is the man to take his place.

Earlier this evening, McCourt announced that the group featuring Johnson and businessmen Mark Walter, Peter Guber, Stan Kasten, Bobby Patton and Todd Boehly won the bidding process with a bid of $2 billion, per a report by the AP.

According to The Wall Street Journal, this sale shatters the previous record for the sale of an American sports franchise -- the Miami Dolphins were sold for $1.1 billion three years ago.

McCourt paid $430 million for the team in 2004 and will make out with approximately $1 billion. In addition, “McCourt and ‘certain affiliates of the purchasers’ would acquire the land surrounding Dodger Stadium for $150 million,” the AP reports states.

Dodger fans and the city of Los Angeles have been riddled with the McCourt drama since Frank and Jamie separated in October 2009, spurring a fight for the team between the broke couple.

Last April, MLB Commissioner Bud Selig appointed an MLB representative to handle the franchise’s daily operations as the Dodgers endured bankruptcy court and a decree from Selig to sell the team by the end of April 2012.

Though Johnson is not the majority owner of the Dodgers -- Walter, the executive officer of Guggenheim Partners, will assume that role -- as arguably the most beloved athlete in Los Angeles sports history, it gives the fans and the city something to rally behind coming into the team's Opening Day on April 5.
