Newt Gingrich plans to lay off a third of his campaign staff as part of a new strategy to clinch a last-minute win at the Republican presidential nomination in August.

Gingrich will attempt to block Mitt Romney from the required 1,144 delegates he needs to win the nomination by campaigning lighter for state primaries.  Instead, Gingrich will focus his attention on Tampa, home to the nomination convention, and ask convention delegates to back him, said USA Today.

"We're focusing exclusively on what it'll take to win what we're going to be calling a big-choice convention in August," said Joe DeSantis, Gingrich's communications director.

According to Politico, the plan was implemented largely because of a lack of cash flow.  Gingrich's campaign showed $1.55 million cash on hand compared to a debt of $1.55 million.

In another big strategy switch up, Gingrich will replace current campaign manager Michael Krull with Vince Haley, a longtime aid, said the Wall Street Journal.

The former Speaker of the House has recently been called on by conservatives to withdraw from the race, said Reuters.  Stepping aside would allow Rick Santorum to go head-to-head with frontrunner Mitt Romney as the nomination convention inches closer.
