Were you hoping for "Ghostbusters 3" and itching to see that "????" change to a solid release year in IMDb

"Ghostbusters" fans will have to sit tight and wait a little longer for that green-light. The film will remain a specter for the time being.

Dan Aykroyd, "Ghostbusters" creator, co-writer and co-star, told London's "Telegraph" the third installment of the franchise has an uncertain future.

"At this point it's in suspended animation," Aykroyd said. "The studio, the director Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis feel there must be a way to do it, but Bill Murray will not do the movie.

Though he is not on-board for the film or interested in being involved, Aykroyd explained that rumors of Murray shredding the script are not true, either.

"Bill Murray is not capable of such behavior," he told Empire Magazine. "This is simply something that would not be in his nature. Bill has too much positive estimation of my writing skills to shred the work."

And while it would be ideal to have Murray back in his role as Dr. Peter Venkman, Aykroyd said the film could still be made without him. And that makes sense, considering he's been working on the script since 1999.

"…Ghostbusters is bigger than any one component," he explained. "The concept is much larger than any individual role…"

But Aykroyd is not interested in milking the franchise. Instead, he said, he hopes to "hand the franchise down to new blood." The new story line would reflect that, centering on the original Ghostbusters' inability to aptly, well, bust ghosts.

"My character, Ray, is now blind in one eye and can't drive the Cadillac," he said. "He's got a bad knee and can't carry the packs. ... Egon is too large to get into the harness. We need young blood and that's the promise. We're gonna hand it to a new generation."

And that would include casting four new roles: three males and a young woman.
