Bringing Up Bebe

by Pamela Druckerman

(Penguin Press, $25.95)

This book is drawing comparisons to Amy Chua’s “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother” and that in itself is entirely intriguing. The novel details an American journalist’s experience raising her child in France as she soon discovers that the French might be on to something with their relaxed, easy going parenting style. If you liked the musings of Tiger mom Chua, this book is a must read.

Event: MG Lord reading at Book Soup on Sunset

Febuary 17, 7:00PM

The author of “The Accidental Feminist: How Elizabeth Taylor Raised Our Consciousness and We Were Too Distracted By Her Beauty to Notice” will be discussing how the various film roles that Taylor played shattered the stereotypes of women in film. Taylor was much more than beauty and fame, so any Taylor fan would appreciate this special look into the woman behind the jewels.

That Woman: The Life of Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor

by Anne Sebba

(St. Martin’s, $27.99)

If you’ve seen “The King’s Speech” or even Madonna’s “W.E,” this book will satisfy your curiosity about the woman who stole the heart of a British King. Wallis Simpson, the twice divorced American, was infamously known for turning a monarchy upside down when Edward VIII abdicated his throne to marry her. If you’re looking for a fairytale story with a twist, this biography is for you.

Girlchild

by Tupelo Hassman

(Farrar, Straus and Giroux, $23 )

This is a heartfelt and powerful novel about a little girl overcoming all odds to make her own path. Anyone who knows what it’s like to fight against the mistakes of their family’s past will relate to this young girl’s struggle to make her own future. It’s about girl power all the way and surviving by your own wits. Read it or regret it.
