The Super Bowl has come and gone, and the NHL is still in the mid-season stretch.

This past week was all about Edmonton Oilers center Sam Gagner.

To say he had a really good week is an understatement. Gagner wrote his name in the NHL history books on February 2 by earning eight points in one game, against the Chicago Blackhawks--something that hasn’t happened in 23 years. With his four goals and four assists, Gagner joined only 10 other players have had an eight-point game.

As if that wasn’t enough, in the next game he played against the Detroit Red Wings he notched three points, with two goals and one assist.

His takeaway: “It is a great lesson to never set limits,” Gagner told NHL.com.

Injuries

-After taking a slap shot to the face, New York Islanders Travis Hamonic underwent surgery to repair a broken nose. Hamonic will be out for the next two weeks. The injury occurred on Feb. 4 from a slap shot by Buffalo Sabres defenseman Christian Ehrhoff during the third period.

-Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard will be out for two games after breaking a finger on Feb. against the Vancouver Canucks. Howard broke his finger when he tried stopping a shot in the first five minutes of the third period. He went to the bench to get his finger taped up and resumed playing, helping the Red Wings win 4-3 in a shootout.

Fines/Suspensions

-Chuck Kobasew of the Colorado Avalance has been fined $2,500 for tripping Dan Hamhuis of the Vancouver Canucks during the February 4 game.

-Philadelphia Flyer Zac Rinaldo has been fined for $5,000 for two different incidents: a hit on New Jersey Devils Jacob Josefson and for tripping Devils forward Zach Parise during the February 4 game.

-The New Jersey Devils' Patrik Elias has been fined $2,500 for boarding Mike Blunden of the Montreal Canadiens during the February 2 game.

-Another Devils forward, Eric Boulton, has also been fined $3,500, for slashing Mike Rupp of the New York Rangers during the January 31 game.

-Columbus Blue Jacket Jared Boll did an illegal check to the head of Joe Thornton of the San Jose Sharks during the January 31 game, and has been fined $2,500.

Trades

-Erik Christensen has been traded to the Minnesota Wild from the New York Rangers, in exchange for Casey Wellman. The Wild also received a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

Goal(s) of the Week

-Hands down, Sam Gagner deserves the title, however, in his case, it will be goals of the week.  Watch the history making highlights here:

Save of the Week

Vancouver Canucks goalie Cory Schneider threw himself in front of the goal, stopping a shot from Chicago Blackhawks Brendan Morrison during the Jan. 31 game.  The Canucks won the game in overtime 3-2 and Schneider earned the title of the goalie with the save of the week.
