Romney Wins Arizona, Continues Battling In Michigan
According to the Washington Post, Romney was expected to win Arizona based on earlier exit polls and the continued support of Gov. Jan Brewer and the large Mormon population.
Romney picks up all of the state's 29 delegates after exit polls showed Romney with 43% over 28% for Rick Santorum, said CNN. Both Arizona Republicans and independents are allowed to participate in the primary, with over half of all eligible voters casting their vote prior to Tuesday's race.
The latest polling in Michigan shows Romney joins Santorum at the top of the pack, with Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich showing poorly, said USA Today.
Santorum and Romney have consistently played tug-of-war to secure the frontrunner position in the Republican nomination. Romney campaigned hard in Michigan, spending over $4 million in advertising, said NBC. Santorum met the challenge and spent $2 million in return on the state's campaign trail.
Michigan voters have been lackluster about either candidate, with early exit polls showing that less than half of the voters there said they backed their candidate "strongly," said the Washington Post. The same poll showed one in six only made their decision because they disliked the other available options.
