As a first time Oscar go-er and presenter Sunday, Milla Jovovich looked stunning in a white structured one-shoulder Elie Saab gown, which gathered slightly at the waist and fell into a short train. It was as if she wore a wedding gown style dress with a lot more edge. Although her red lips were perfect with the dress, the rest of her makeup was too costume-y but the entire look worked well.

In gorgeous red, Natalie Portman wore a vintage 1954 Christian Dior haute couture gown. She deserves to be on the list because she was one of the only women in this silhouette, and she pulled it off wonderfully. Up close, the dress was polka-dotted which made it playful, but gave it the vintage vibe. Natalie wore a attention-grabbing necklace and had her hair down but slicked back so that her strapless dress and necklace took center stage. She probably could not have orchestrated a better return to the Oscars for the first time since having her baby and winning the Best Actress statue last year.

In Vivienne Westwood, Rose Byrne went for a gown that could be classified as glamorous evening attire more so than any of the others, and the most glitzy of them all as well. The dress was midnight blue, but was frequently mistaken as black on the carpet. The contours of the dress were perfect on her body and the back was a show-stopping thin black strap that met the dress far down her back. To finish her look, her short coifed hairdo was the perfect accompaniment to the style and fit of the dress.

In yet more red, Michelle Williams picked a Louis Vuitton dress that seemed to perfectly fit her style and personality. The lines and fabric of her dress were mesmerizing, including the silk mousseline and organza skirt which could have backfired placed around her waist, but instead accentuated it and gave her some curves. Her simple but identifiable blonde pixie cut complimented her look, and even though the small silver bow detail on the waist seemed somewhat over-the-top, it played up the innocent princess aura that worked beautifully on Michelle . Nina Garcia described Michelle’s choice as consistent with her style while being “both beautiful and unexpected.”

In a fierce Alexander McQueen black and gold-embroidered gown Jessica Chastain looked gorgeous. Her striking red hair color pulled back slightly and falling back into effortless waves complimented the strapless creation. She took a risk with the black and gold which paid off tenfold with her pale skin and perfect makeup. It was definitely one of those dresses that wouldn’t have looked nearly as good on anyone else, but it worked on her. Ms. Chastain has made great fashion choices this awards season, although she would probably look amazing in a paper bag.

Honorable Mentions: Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford, Rooney Mara in Givenchy who Nina Garcia described as “Audrey Hepburn gone punk,” Emma Stone in Giambattista Valli and Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace (I just wish she had worn a more adventurous color but this time the black looked va-va-voom). And, it should be noted, Meryl Streep in Lanvin and Glenn Close in Zac Posen both picked dresses that were age appropriate and Oscar-fabulous.
