With the Oscars just around the corner, we put our attention towards the first time nominees, or in most cases the underdogs.

After earning his fame in hilarious flicks such as "Superbad," "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and "Knocked Up," Jonah Hill took on his first dramatic role of his career in "Moneyball". His groundbreaking performance earned him his first Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actor.

With a Golden Globe already under her belt, Octavia Spencer is also a first time Oscar nominee. Her recent win as the outspoken maid in "The Help" gives her a solid chance at securing the Oscar for best supporting actress.

The international sensation, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" produced another first-time nominee, Rooney Mara. Her performance earned her a spot in the prestigious Best Actress category. Mara will face some extremely tough competition, as she is up against Oscar veterans such as Michelle Williams and the timeless Meryl Streep.
