What do Johnny Depp, David Beckham, and Prince Harry all have in common? Besides being ridiculously good-looking, they have all been seen sporting nail polish out on the streets and at public functions.

These new “man-icures” are part of a growing acceptability of men’s affinity towards fashion and beauty. While a few years back, men who made apparent efforts toward their appearances were deemed feminine, today’s society regards those said men as trend-setting and not restricted by culture’s norms. Although men’s nail polish arguably has been prevalent before – most notably in 2009 - the trend has been making a comeback in recent months.

The most prominent new men’s nail polish brand in the past six months is Evolution Man, available in three “masculine” colors - grey 'Pavement,' metallic purple 'Alter Ego,' and gunmetal 'Stand Out.' These colors give a contemporary take on the usual classic black, blue and white colors.

“Men are becoming more aware that how their nails look can define them,” Evolution Man’s Marco Berardini told Allure. “Besides, if you're wearing a Rolex with chewed, scraggly nails, it's a contradiction of sorts."

Another line, Alphanail, has the tagline “Designed for men. Worn by warriors.” This brand features Matte and Metallics collections, and claims to give the wearer ultra masculinity and confidence. Instead of the generic brush in the bottle, Alphanail provides a nail polish click brush applicator. It strives to revolutionize men’s grooming, and is a “proclamation of the inner attitude of the alpha.”

For now, this re-emerging trend has not convinced all men to use the stereotypically female products. However, celebrity influence may be able to impact the non-conformists.
