"There's no way around it," LL Cool J began at the 2012 Grammy Awards, "we've had a death in our family." He continued, "For me, the only thing that feels right is to begin with a prayer for a woman who we love, for our fallen sister, Whitney Houston."

Starting off with words of wisdom and consideration, the rapper and now "NCIS: Los Angeles" star set the proper tone for the show instantly. The obviously somber and mournful mood in the room as a result of legendary artist Whitney Houston's death was accompanied by one of inspiration and hope.

"Heavenly father, we thank you for sharing our sister Whitney with us. Today our thoughts are with her mother, her daughter and all of her loved ones. And although she is gone too soon, we remain truly blessed to have been touched by her beautiful spirit, and to have the legacy of her music to cherish and share forever. Amen."

The prayer was followed by a video of Houston singing "I Will Always Love You" at the 1993 award show.

LL Cool J followed the sentimental moment surounding the superstar's death with charisma and cheer, welcoming Adele back to performing and creating a feeling of excitement for a night meant to honor the music industry and all who make it what it is.

The host told MTV, "We were up all night, and we just wanted to figure out [and] show Whitney Houston the love, the appreciation, the love, the respect she deserves based on her as a human being and the career that she had and give her that love and make sure that people know we care."

But he also explained there needed to be a delicate balance between praising Houston and honoring those nominated tonight. "At the same time," he told MTV, "there are so many other artists here that are nominated." He continued, "They deserve to have a good time and enjoy themselves and not be weighed down by the burden."

LL certainly found the appropriate means to honor the legend as well as those performing tonight.

After seven Grammy shows without a host, LL Cool J did not disappoint.
