A shootout between Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Long Beach left two dead and one injured, authorities reported Thursday evening.  The incident occurred at the Glenn M. Anderson Federal Building, now closed pending the investigation.

A statement released by ICE indicated that one agent died at the scene, while a second was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.  Media outlets are reporting that the gunman was killed in the altercation, and law enforcement officers are investigating the possibility that the shooter died of self-inflicted wounds.  ICE officials have not identified the gunman as an ICE agent.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the shooter fired on his supervisor over a dispute, although the reason for the argument remains unclear.  Law enforcement officers report that another agent attempted to overtake the gunman and another round of gunfire broke out.

The Times reports that the agent who died was shot at least once in the abdomen.  A spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement declined to comment and said the agency would release a statement at a later date, according to a report from the San Francisco Chronicle. "The names of the agents are not being released pending notification of the next of kin," the ICE statement said.

Police and federal officials continue to investigate the incident.
