Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich gave in to political pressure Monday, releasing documents pertaining to his work for beleagured mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.  The release came about an hour prior to Monday’s GOP debate in Tampa, Fla.

The documents show that Gingrich’s firm, The Gringrich Group, collected $25,000 per month for consulting work in 2006.  But critics say the disclosure does not go far enough.  According to Reuters, “Romney senior adviser Eric Fehrnstrom tweeted: ‘Newt's K Street firm finally released the Freddie contract, but only for 2006. Where are missing years? He started there in 99.’”

Gingrich has come under fire for what critics called his lobbying for Freddie Mac.  The 2006 agreement released by the Gingrich campaign showed he worked as a consultant and not a lobbyist.  Gingrich’s firm raked in at least $1.6 million over the course of the its contract with Freddie Mac.

As the Guardian points out, the document released on Monday does little to shed light on what sort of services The Gingrich Firm provided for Freddie Mac.  The contract cited the following duties: “Consulting and related services as requested by Freddie Mac's Director, Public policy.”

When questioned about the other five years of contracts during Monday night’s debate, Gingrich said his team is working to determine whether the campaign can release the other documents, citing a confidentiality agreement with Freddie Mac.
