Political rhetoric between the Republican presidential nominees can best be described as taunting. Their jeers have taken on many forms, but some of the most damning characterizations have come through political ads. As South Carolina voters prepare for Saturday’s primary, they can rest assured knowing they’ll be bombarded with campaign ads beaming through their televisions.

Of course, the best political ads are never the nicest ones. Let’s take a look at some of the recent dirty ads of the GOP.

Newt Gingrich and the “Corporate Raider” Mitt Romney

The original version of Newt Gingrich’s ad attacking Romney for his former role as CEO of Bain Capital was released by a super PAC supporting Gingrich. However, Glenn Kessler’s Fact Checker blog played detective and found very little truth in the video’s claims. Later, Gingrich said, “I am calling on the super PAC. I cannot coordinate with them. I cannot coordinate directly with them, but I can speak out as a citizen talking to you. I’m calling on them to either edit out every single mistake or pull the entire film.” Romney made a similar response regarding his super PAC, which left both men victims of parody on The Daily Show.

The Cult of Romney and Rick Santorum

Santorum pulled out all the stops with this spot. If the above ad is any indication, the former Pennsylvania senator wants desperately to prove to Romney followers and his fellow Republicans that he is a true conservative. His hard-lined approach has been unrelenting, especially after a recount showed on Thursday he in fact won the Iowa caucus.

Santorum’s Betrayal

Never one to shy away from controversy, Ron Paul in turn took aim at Santorum. In an earlier ad, called “Three of a Kind," Paul attempted to kill three birds with one stone. Since releasing that spot though, Paul lost in Iowa and New Hampshire, and as the Republican primaries blaze on, his chances at cinching the nomination look slim.

Romney questions Gingrich’s mental stability

According to WebMD, “chaotic decisions” and “erratic behavior” could classify an individual as bipolar. Mitt Romney put out another ad, this one titled “Undisciplined” featuring former Congresswoman Susan Molinari describing Gingrich’s leadership as chaotic. The ad gets dirty when you learn Gingrich’s mother, Kathleen, who passed away in 2003, suffered from bipolar disorder.
