The death toll in a bombing in Kano, Nigeria is now at least 178 people. The bomb blasts and gunmen were from Boko Haram, a radical Islamist sect. Most of the bomb blasts and shooting sprees targeted police stations Friday. More than 10 million people ran for cover.

"We have 178 people killed in the two main hospitals," the senior doctor in Kano's Murtala Mohammed hospital told Reuters following Friday's attacks, citing records from his own and the other main hospital of Nasarawa. "There could be more, because some bodies have not yet come in and others were collected early."

Boko Haram has also been accused of killing hundreds of people in other bombings and shootings. Most attacks have targeted security forces, establishment figures and Christians, according to Reuters. Nigeria is roughly half Muslim half Christian.

The Friday attacks were an attempt to overthrow the government and establish an Islamic state, according to the BBC.

Another 10 people were killed Sunday in Bauchi, which is near Kano, when police fought gunmen attempting to rob a bank, Reuters reports.
