The Pentagon admitted responsibility for the air strike that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers on the Afghan border last month. The Pentagon blamed the strike on “inadequate co-ordination” and “incorrect mapping,” according to The Daily Beast.

The military investigation also said that U.S. and Afghan commanders falsely thought there were no Pakistani troops in the area and did not mean to hurt anyone.

The concession that the U.S. was at fault is “expected to embarrass the American military but points to a way out of the deepening mistrust between the two countries,” according to the Wall Street Journal.

The report contradicts some early U.S. accounts, which claimed that Pakistan gave an all clear to U.S. troops to fire.
