The Senate voted to extend a Social Security payroll tax cut as well as jobless benefits for another two months Saturday morning in Washington D.C.

The passage is a small victory for President Barack Obama who has supported the legislation from the beginning.

According to the Associated Press

The renewal of the 2-percentage-point cut in the Social Security payroll tax for 160 million workers and unemployment benefits averaging about $300 a week for the additional millions of people who have been out of work for six months or more is a modest step forward for Obama's year-end jobs agenda.

The payroll tax measure had overwhelming support with a vote of 89-10. It will be sent to the House next week where many Republicans will only reluctantly support it.

House Speaker John Boehner did not participate in the negotiations for the payroll tax cuts.
