Ross Truett Ashley Identified as Virginia Tech Gunman by Police

Police also confirmed that Ashley took his own life approximately 30 minutes after fatally shooting Virginia Tech police officer Deriek W. Crouse, 39.
"At this time, there remains no prior connection or contact between Ashley, who was enrolled part-time at Radford University, and the Virginia Tech Officer he killed," the police said in a statement. "State police investigators are continuing their work to establish a motive in the killing and to recreate Ashley’s movements in the days and hours leading up to the murder-suicide."
Virginia Tech officials put the campus on lockdown after news of the shooting spead, brining back haunting memories of the 2007 shooting spree by a student that left 33 dead.
Yesterday's shooting happened just hours after university officials met with the Department of Education in Washington, D.C. to contest a $55,000 fine for a sluggish response to the 2007 massacre, NPR reported.
"It has been confirmed that Mr. Ashley was enrolled part time at Radford University," the university said in a statement, adding that he was a business management major from Partlow, Virginia.
"The entire Radford University community sends heartfelt condolences to everyone impacted by this tragedy and offers its full cooperation with the law enforcement agencies conducting the investigation," the university said.
