The newspaper Rodong Sinmun, the state-run media of the ruling Workers' Party, urged Kim Jong Un to "assume the supreme commandership, as wished by the people." The newspaper, also the primary outlet of the government's policy statements, said, "We will complete the great task of our songun revolution by upholding Comrade Kim Jong Un as our supreme commander, our general."

According to The New York Times, the songun, or "military first," revolution refers to Kim Jong Il's policy of focusing on the Korean People's Army and using it to police the country and dictate foreign policy.

Kim Jong Il took Kim Jong Un, his third son, out of obscurity in 2009 to be groomed as the nation's next leader. He was named successor in September 2010, making him the third-generation Kim to rule the nation. It is believed the son is in his late 20s.
