UPDATE 3:00 P.M. PT: The gunman was likely the second victim in the shooting, according to authorities. MSNBC reported: "Police refused to say explicitly that no other gunmen were involved. But they said they were confident that the situation is secure and 'you can read between the lines.'"
The Daily Beast reported: "A law enforcement official told the Associated Press that the gunman who killed a police officer is believed to be dead."

UPDATE 2:10 P.M. PT: CNN is reporting that the lockdown on Virgina Tech's campus has been lifted.

Two people are dead after a shooter opened fire on the Virginia Tech campus Thursday shortly after noon local time.

According to the Virginia Tech website, which has turned into an alert page, the police officer was performing a routine traffic stop in a parking lot where he was shot and killed.

Witnesses told campus police that the shooter fled his car on foot, headed towards another parking lot on campus. A second victim was later found in the parking lot, also dead.

Now campus police say the status of the shooter is unknown, and all residents of campus and the surrounding Blacksburg area have been advised to stay inside. Transit around the area has been suspended.

A bulletin released by Virginia tech described the shooter as a "as white male, gray sweat pants, gray hat w/neon green brim, maroon hoodie and backpack."

33 people were killed, including the gunman who turned the gun on himself, in April 2007 when Seung-Hui Cho opened fire across the Virginia Tech campus, the deadliest campus shooting in U.S. history.
