Cain's "Friendship" Takes Toll On Campaign, Family
Herman Cain's 999 Plan glory days faded fast as the latest accuser- a 46-year-old Atlanta businesswoman- stepped forward.
According to CNN, Ginger White claimed on Monday that she and Cain had a 13-year affair and that he had paid many of her expenses.
Though Cain admitted to helping her financially, he maintained that she was just "a friend."
"She was out of work and had trouble paying her bills and I had known her as a friend," Cain said, adding: "She wasn't the only friend who I had helped in these tough economic times, and so her messages to me were relating to 'need money for rent' or whatever the case may be. I don't remember all the specifics," Cain said, as reported by CNN.
Cain's wife, Gloria, "did not know that we were friends until she (White) came out with this story" on Monday, Cain said, later adding: "My wife did not know about it, and that was the revelation. My wife found out about it when she (White) went public with it."
Though Cain maintained his innocence and implied the accusations may be at the hands of his opponents- calling politics a "dirty game," his campaign support has been rattled.
"His chance at winning the presidency are effectively zero," said Dave Welch to CBS News, a Republican strategist who worked on both of John McCain's presidential bids.
Republican strategist Kellyanne Conway also said to CBS: "It's the daily dose of the wince-and-cringe factor that leaves people wondering what could be coming next,"
Those working on his campaign think otherwise, according to The Washington Post:
“Clearly it has slowed down our momentum,” said Steve Grubbs, Cain’s Iowa campaign director. “But it has not stopped our forward progress.”
Cain said on Sean Hannity's Fox News show that he would make a decision by Monday whether he will continue the campaign or end it because of "the toll this is taking on his family," reported Politico.
