"Amazing," "man cave" and "occupy" are just a few of the words that made Lake Superior State University's 37th annual List of Words Banished from the Queen's English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness.

According to LSSU, the word "amazing" was nominated the most. "LSSU was surprised at the number of nominations this year for 'amazing' and surprised to find that it hadn't been included on the list in the past. Many nominators mentioned over-use on television when they sent their entries," its website said. Additionally, the university noted: "A Facebook page – 'Overuse of the Word Amazing' – threatened to change its title to 'Occupy LSSU' if 'amazing' escaped banishment this year…"

The phrase "baby bump," which has received nominations in past years, came in a close second. 

Other words and phrases that appeared on the 2012 banished words list: "shared sacrifice," "blowback," "the new normal," "pet parent," "win the future," "trickeration," "ginormous" and "thank you in advance."

"With the addition of this year's nominations, the list of words and phrases banished over the years has become ginormous," an LSSU representative said. "Worn-out words and phrases are the new normal this year, but with some shared sacrifice, we can clean up the language and win the future."

The word banishment list was created by former LSSU Public Relations Director Bill Rabe and a group of his friends, and was first released in 1976. Since then, tens of thousands of words and phrases have been nominated for the list.
