Then - "7th Heaven" Cast (TVGuide)
Then - "7th Heaven" Cast (TVGuide)
For 11 seasons, the Camden Family on “7th Heaven” captivated us. The Aaron Spelling- produced family drama series, which would have celebrated its 15th year anniversary this August, captured our hearts and our television screens. We smiled, laughed, cried, yelled with the minister’s family in the small town of Glen Oaks. From 1996-2007, the WB’s most watched series went through numerous cast changes and storylines but the main cast truly remains near and dear to the hearts of viewers.

Here’s a quick update on what the former Camden family of “7th Heaven” have been up to since the show’s end:

Stephen Collins (Rev. Eric Camden): Collins, who played the protestant minister and patriarch of the family, was one of the only two cast members to appear in every episode. Since the end of the show in 2007, he has made guest appearances in shows such as “Private Practice” as the father of the titular character, “Brothers & Sisters” and “The Office.” Most recently, he starred in the ABC science-fiction dramedy “No Ordinary Family”, which was cancelled in May of this year after one season.

Catherine Hicks (Annie Camden): Hicks portrayed the matriarch of the Camden family and since 2007, she has spent most of her acting time in made-for-television movies. In 2010, she took to the stage as a character in “Why Torture is Wrong and the People Who Love Them.” Her most recent work is on an independent film called “Dorfman.” Outside of the industry, Hicks has participated in charitable services promoting online safety for children as well as preventing prescription medication abuse.

Barry Watson (Matt Camden): After Watson’s character, the eldest son, departed the show, (because of Watson’s diagnosis of Hodgkin’s disease) only to return, then depart again, he continued on in television. He played the titular character on ABC’s drama “What about Brian” from 2006-2007.  After that, he acted opposite Christina Applegate on “Samantha Who.” Most recently, he appeared in the ABC Family Original Movie “My Future Boyfriend.”

Jessica Biel (Mary Camden): Biel’s character Mary might be remembered as the most rebellious of the Camden kids as well as the first to depart from the show. Since then, Biel has made the leap to film star quite successfully. She’s appeared in big budget films such as “The A Team”, “Valentine’s Day” and her upcoming projects include “New Year’s Eve” and in 2012, “Total Recall.” She’s also known for her romance with actor/singer Justin Timberlake.

Beverley Mitchell (Lucy Camden): In addition to Collins above, Mitchell’s character Lucy was the only other character to appear on every episode of the show.  After “7th Heaven” wrapped, Mitchell released a self-entitled country album and is currently appearing as guidance counselor Katelyn O’Malley on the ABC Family show, “The Secret of Life of the American Teenager.”

David Gallagher (Simon Camden): After playing the youngest son Simon for eight seasons, Gallagher left the show to pursue a film major at the University of Southern California. Since graduating USC in 2007, Gallagher has guest starred on shows including “Bones”, “Without a Trace”, “The Deep End” and “Numb3rs.” Earlier this year, he appeared in the blockbuster “Super 8” and his most recent role has been playing werewolf Ray Sutton on the CW’s “The Vampire Diaries.”

Mackenzie Rosman (Ruthie Camden): Rosman’s character Ruthie was the youngest and most precocious of the Camden clan, though she matured over her eleven years as part of the cast. Since the show’s end, Rosman has acted in a couple of independent films, but most notably has guest starred in a few episodes on “The Secret of Life of the American Teenager” (where she has had scenes with her former cast sister, Mitchell.)

And the family dog Happy? My guess is that he is off somewhere, still being happy.

No matter how long "7th Heaven" has been off the air, I still find myself singing the theme song every so often. At its peak, the show was so popular that, for instance, the series finale was supposed to air on the now defunct-WB in May of 2006, but since the episode received such high ratings , the new owners (CW) decided to keep the show on the air for another, final, 11th season. The "7th Heaven" fan base is definitely still around, so can anyone say "family reunion" sometime soon?
