Thanksgiving Travel Rush: Some Delays Reported

If you're planning to travel this long holiday weekend, prepare to be patient. Two major storms--one in the Pacific Northwest, the other in the East--are complicating some travelers' plans this Thanksgiving holiday.

According to ABC News:

The first storm, which has already caused flash flooding across Arkansas, is forecast to move into the Southeast, bringing severe weather this evening into tomorrow. It will also bring rain showers and snow showers to the Northeast, with two inches of rain expected in Boston and New York and more than a foot of snow through New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

The worst of the severe weather is forecast to develop tonight across parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, even into North and South Carolinas. Anyone starting their holiday travel today or this evening should be prepared.

Airports around the country were reporting flight delays, including Philadelphia International, Newark International, New York's LaGuardia, San Francisco International and Boston's Logan International airports.

However, USA Today is reporting that--for the most part--these delays are minor.

More from USA Today:

In the Northeast, where poor weather is forecast for much of the day, delays averaging up to 70 minutes are being reported as of 3 p.m. ET in Boston because of poor visibility, according to the FAA.

On-and-off delays averaging 15-45 minutes have also been affecting Philadelphia, New York LaGuardia and Newark throughout the day.

In the West, poor visibility is backing up flights at San Francisco by about 55 minutes, according to the FAA. Conditions there could improve by the afternoon.

The day before Thanksgiving is typically the busiest travel day of the year. According to AAA, 42.5 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more this holiday weekend. That figure represents a 4 percent increase from the previous year.
