According to Mercury News, the peaceful raid happened early Monday morning around 5 a.m. with protesters expecting the eviction. A barricade was set up around the plaza, and some who resisted were arrested.

"By the time Mayor Jean Quan toured through two hours later, there was nothing to see but collapsed tents and abandoned signs."

Over the weekend, the city had been issuing eviction notices, and some campers already began to move out.

According to the New York Times, the plaza smelled of vinegar because some protesters put it on their bandanas to protect themselves from tear gas. Tear gas was used last month as police tried to clear out the encampment.
