Occupiers outside City Hall were riled up Thursday afternoon when police put up a sign indicating daily hours of operation from now on would be between 5:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m.

Shouts rose up from the crowd: "Safety violation!" "Officer, did the city council tell you to do this?" "Who do you work for?"

"I see the sign as a warning that they may come tonight,” said Yvonne De La Vega. The Occupy L.A. website contributor has been a part of the encampment since Oct. 1.

"Just the fact that they brought this on us on Thanksgiving shows a total disregard for a national sentiment and a national holiday,” she said.

Other Occupiers are less concerned about what the sign might mean. Shortly after it was posted, the police notice was smeared in purple paint.

"Those signs have always been up in this park," Kenny Parker said. "Nothing has changed. They’re just trying to scare people." 

Forty-year-old Sean Jones, a general contractor, was wearing a chicken suit while holding a poster that read, "Eat me, Obama". 

"As far as Obama's plans and stuff like that, we’ve gone in a different direction," he said. "He's actually hurt the self-employed—not just the general construction, but the small businesses."

Almost a third of the Occupiers, which recently has hovered around 600 people in L.A., left to join their families for Thanksgiving. Those who stayed were offered food around 11:30 this morning, a full feast of turkey, greenbeans, salads, roasted chicken, vegan pumpkin pie, black beans, salsa and more.  

Deirdre Milks, 37, who started work in the food tent on the encampment's fourth day, said they'd received huge donations for the Thanksgiving meal from businesses across the city.

"We had an 8-year-old girl bake banana bread for people who are fighting the fight," Milks said. "Some of the police sent over a big turkey, which is kind of funny."
