Nationwide Crackdown On Occupy Movement?

Is there a coordinated national effort to crackdown on the "Occupy" movement? That's the question following the overnight raid of Occupy Wall Street in New York City and the admission by Oakland Mayor Jean Quan of a conference call with other officials from cities experiencing Occupy protests.

Quan told the BBC: “I was recently on a conference call with 18 cities across the country who had the same situation where what had started as a political movement and a political encampment ended up being an encampment that was no longer in control of the people who started them."

As AlterNet noted of the eyebrow-raising quote: "It's unclear whether they 'coordinated' the recent raids, but it's an intriguing tidbit."

Tuesday's crackdown on protesters camped in Zuccotti Park follows similar efforts to evict demonstrators in Oakland, Portland, Salt Lake City, St. Louis, Denver and Atlanta. There was also some confusion over whether the Occupy Phoenix camp was being raided on Tuesday after a flurry of activity on the group's Twitter account. The group later clarified that it was not being raided.

Meantime, the Occupy L.A. movement remains strong following the OWS raid in New York City. However, it's unclear how much longer protesters will be welcome as officials are working on a timeline to end the Occupy encampment at City Hall. Members of the movement will meet on Tuesday with city officials and police for another round of negotiations.

On Thursday, a Day of Action is planned in New York City to celebrate the second anniversary of the movement. Among the day's events, protesters will try and shut down Wall Street, occupy the subway and take Foley Square.

Below is a breakdown of raids and eviction notices served at Occupy movements around the world:

Occupy Canada

Occupy protesters in Toronto and Calgary have been issued eviction notices. In Toronto, the notices called on the protesters to leave immediately, stating they have until Wednesday morning.

According to CBC News:

"A lawyer acting on behalf of the protesters has served the city with an injuction notice for a stay on the eviction. A decision on the injunction is expected at a downtown courthouse at 2:30 p.m. PST."
