NASCAR fans booed First Lady Michelle Obama when she was introduced during an appearance with a wounded veteran at a speedway in Miami Sunday afternoon, ABC reports.

Mrs. Obama was appearing at NASCAR's Sprint Cup Finale to support Joining Forces, an initiative designed to help hire and train veterans. Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, appeared alongside the First Lady.

Obama and Biden were appearing with retired Army Sgt. Andrew Barry and his family. Barry retired in 2009 after being wounded while serving tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. He received wild applause from the audience for his volunteer work at an Orlando veteran's center.

The hostility at the Homestead-Miami Speedway was a far cry from the pre-race drivers' meeting Sunday where the women received a standing ovation, the Washington Post reports. Mrs. Obama had her own compliment for NASCAR.

The organization has been "amazing, in terms of its support, not just today, but every day for military families," Obama said.

This isn't the first time the women have met an unfriendly audience. Their appearances at World Series Games in 2009 and 2011 were also met with jeers from the crowd.

The First Lady and Dr. Biden are scheduled to serve as grand marshals for the finale, according to AP.
